Question Help with Importing!

Well, I just did my first skin. It's a rather fugly arcane vault, but i guess it's ok for my first try. Anyways, I used Gimp to make the edits, and Warcraft 3 Viewer for conversions. So i opened up WEU's import manager, and then entered the directory for the skin I had made (it was a .blp file). I didn't notice until later, but it changed it into an .mdl, and I've never seen that extension before (WC3 Viewer's models are .mdx). So I set the unit to use that as a model, but when I created the unit, it appeared as a big checkered green box. I tried reloading the map over and over, but nothing worked.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I believe that i have to find the .mdl version of my file, but I don't know where it's located!
