I see you realize the implications.

But our deathmatch will have to wait since I barely have time to post here.

I am serious about making a pure wc2 clone (when I get the time for it... grrrrr)
It will be much easier to find players for it than for custom mix games.
Also it would be much easier to make it because you only have to clone stuff, no need to think of anything.

I realize it would need balancing, wc2 was far from balanced.
But again balancing is much easier than adding new stuff,
it is also much more acceptable to old wc2 players than random addons.

Some things I had in mind:
  • Exsorcism would NOT kill death knights in 1 hit.
  • Skeletons would be stronger
  • Dragons would be spell immune (even to friendly buffs)
  • Hawks would be smaller and cheaper than dragons
  • Bloodlust would deal 2x, not 3x
  • Bloodlust and heal would have autocast
  • Troll regeneration upgrade would work on all orc units (blood transfusion)

iam not sure about the exorcism and the troll regeneration but it has to be tested

Well I am not sure either, but tweaking stuff is easy once you have a proper clone set up.

I also have specific ideas as to how to make sure this project does not last 4 years like so many of it's cousins.

The point as always is to make a playable beta as soon as possible.

So the first milestone I would set up for this project would be this:
Make a playable version with ONLY Tier 1 units from wc2.
(no work on upgrades or spells - this is strictly forbidden, no exceptions)

Now when you place a goal like this you achieve 2 things:
First you get a goal that you are absolutely sure CAN BE DONE.
(this boosts team morale ofc, which is not to be neglected as we can see from wc3 modding history)
Second you get extremely early beta and thus you get feedback very early.

Next stage would be for example: add upgrades to lumber mills and forges, also add anything else that can work without Tier 2 castle.

Next Stage add Tier 2 Castles and new buildings and units
(but no upgrades or spells are permitted)

Next stage .... you get the picture.

The thing that makes this kind of development superior are this:
  • No one ever doubts that the job cannot be done or will never be finished.
  • Even if job stalls for a time you have a previous stage as a playable version thus you can get feedback on it in the mean time.
  • You can quit after any complete stage and not feel like the project was a failure because you know you have made a playable map.

Also making a 99% perfect clone of wc2 has this benefits:
1. there is no need to invent enything
2. there are no conflicting ideas between developers as to what should be done.
