use a variable to switch between the code that makes it appear above (if its set) and appear like in-game text (not the same as chat text but it still works) if it isn't set

this could be used in several ways i think this is a lovely way to do things, you could also make a text appear to all people in range, or just all allies (practically disabling all chat) or just a player group there are soooo many uses for this I CANT COUNT THEM ALL! and i can count pretty high

That trigger is just an example in the demo map, its dumb, dont use it, seriously, make ur own trigger to show the messages.

So what if wanted to swap between not showing and showing, like, in one of my maps(not nabru) i have a mailing system, so when they type -mail player2 XXXX it wont show to other players, is that possible?

Yes, kinda. Set up a trigger with tons of If (condition) then (action)s, so that it would show a game text to the player they would like to mail, saying who mailed it, and what they typed in the position of, in your post, the XXXX.

I used this in my D&D Crystal map, and it worked perfectly. Chats are filtered so that players can speak in character, commands are not shown at all, and anything else is displayed as an OOC message via Show Text. Thanks!

A couple issues I'd like to point out:

a) This system prevents people from talking in game while the Waiting for Players screen is up. Not really a huge loss, totally worth it for the gains, but some players tend to panic when they can't scream at the lag screen.

b) While alliance messaging can obviously be overridden with this system, messages still show up in the chat log for allied players. Some people prefer to chat to obs to prevent their logged messages from being seen.

You could simulate a whole chat system, but it wouldent work during lag. And yeah, the chat log keeps records, so you could still technicaly see what a player is typing by consulting the chat log every so often.
