And I guess because its the easy way and its more messy? Most people just use it to cover up small flaws. Unless it's used properly, then it looks nice.

Sorry hate 'cause I show this as an example of smudge use, but it's horribly smudged. See how he tried to make highlights on the hair? do you like that? or how messy the face looks due to smudge.

I hope you learned something from my tut and that you'll stop using smudge.

Btw doesnt matter, i tried ur method, it was a bit hard to start with, but it's sure more fun than smudge ^^ Cus u can click alot without being afraid of doing wrong, it's really a good way to creativity ^^ And i was making a stone, but then with inspiration i made this :D No smudge this time ^^

yay, one more person cured from smudge! yes, it's more fun this way and less time consuming. And this is the method all digital painters use, it's not like I invented it, only with a tablet the opacity should be around 60-70.

just on a sidenote, i've always used the same technique as TDR displayed here (took me about three tries with photoshop to figure out smudge looks bad and brushes look good)

but these days i use a higher opicity setting then TDR, usually 40-50.
