We're trying to promote new code for the contest, so try to make stand-alone spells without millions of pre-made systems. I realize that's kind of arbitrary, and it really is, but if your spell includes 12 knockbacks and nothing else, if you use my knockback system, you're not doing much new code for the spell. That, for instance, would not be allowed. If you need a few functions for geometrical reasons, etc. that's fine. Storage systems (Including CSSafety-style function sets), as always, are entirely allowed.

This prevents users from using epic terrain size with a million doodads and stuff. The only reason the rule exists is because someone actually managed to break the limit in a past spell session. If you code/make a spell normally, it's not even worth bothering about.

Yes, those are both entirely permissible. As a matter of fact, my last spell session's entry used Vexorian's dummy model.

It's kind of arbitrary, I forgot to finish my line in the first post because I was sleepy. Basically, the winner is decided by public vote like any of the spell sessions, so whatever can make the public happy is the best way to do it. Some of the voters look at code, some don't, etc. Weigh these things in when building your spells!

Updated the first post to address the questions.

I need a few functions from the CasterSystem. Can the spell be dependant on that too; or would you rather have me copy and paste CS_MoveUnit and GetACaster?

Isn't GetACaster identical to a timer stack in CS Safety just with dummy units instead of timers? And CS_MoveUnit I am unfamiliar with, though I highly doubt it's more than 6 lines long. Just do it manually and don't use a function call, it's faster anyways.

I might enter (assuming I can think of something awesome to make), but I have four questions

1) Do we have to notify you before uploading the map, or we can just submit it directly to the Resources section with the [Spell11] prefix? I know f*** all about the general rules of spell sessions, so it would be nice to know before I end up doing something dumb. I know the rules state about WIP screenshots and that, but that doesn't explain anything about the submission :(

2)
Quote:
Entrants must focus on creating new code for the contest rather than using pre-made systems.

Are all non-data-storage systems prohibited, or is there some leeway here? I'm not 100% clear on this rule .

3) Are submissions allowed to be updated if bugs are found/improvements can be made, before the deadline?

4) This'll probably sound silly, but does it have to make sense? i.e. fireballs making ice-y explosions, and random things like that. I want to keep all my options open

You can let me know or not, it's not a requirement. I am sure that if you submit it to the correct place with the correct prefix, I will find it. :p

It's too arbitrary a rule to quantify perfectly, but let me try. If more than 1/3 of the code for your spell is in a system that you imported, you are 99% assured to be yelled at/potentially disqualified. If you need some functions, try to avoid needing them. (Things like polar projections and such can be done directly, among other things)

All non-data, storage systems are not prohibited, but if the systems involved in your spell constitute a large chunk of the code, I will review your entry for disqualification. The idea of these contests is to promote the creation of new code. The safest way to be is to just do everything manually. (I really can't imagine needing a non-storage system for anything that fits this session's theme in the first place except maybe knockback, though that's easy enough to do manually)

CS_MoveUnit is a wrapper around SetUnitX/Y which checks if the point is within WorldBounds. It's a bit more than 6 lines long :P

Beh, I can perhaps do it without the Caster System functions...

Final Fantasy isn't the only thing out there. There's Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, Disgaea, I bet even Touhou.

I have an idea, but it won't be as well executed as everyone else's will be.

Okay, okay, I'm sorry for trying to think of an example people could relate to. I don't even own a television, so I was just thinking of a game with stereotypical 'finisher' moves! This isn't a "Which game had cooler finisher moves" topic.

Also, what about imported sounds? I have a spell idea in mind, but it just won't be the same without a particular custom sound (about 5 seconds long, so it shouldn't exceed the 500kb limit), and the rules don't seem to mention anything about sounds...

Final Fantasy X(-2)'s overdrive abilities are pretty ballin' too.

Regarding sounds: Where did you get the sound from? Did you make it yourself or is it ripped from somewhere? Did you find it online at a free sound-effects website or something?

Where you got it determines if you can use it or not. I think sounds as a general rule should be allowed, but only if you made them yourself or they were created specifically to be used as free resources (e.g.: not UT sounds).
