Default How to make waterfalls

Making waterfalls

Purpose: This tutorial introduces how to make a beautiful winter scenary and a flowing waterfall.

Frozen Throne Required

Getting Started

Make a new map, using Ice Crown Glacier landscape, 64x64. Choose initial tile snow. Now, untick enforce water height limits.

Zoom (requires log in)

Step 1 – Making the waterfall base

Start by selecting “increase cliff (one)” tool, and making a big, 1 layered and curvy waterfall base. Try not to make it too wide - it has to have 2 layers more.

Zoom (requires log in)

Now add another layer on the first one. And finally, add the third layer. You should see something like this:

Zoom (requires log in)

Step 2 – Adding the water

For step 2, start adding shallow water on the layers. Try not to delete all the edges, which surround the water. Also, try to avoid very squary looking places (altough they can be hidden). To get rid of most of the squary places, make your river 1 square wider than you want the final product to be, then use the Apply Cliff: Same Level tool to move over the river, making the cliffs go 1 square over the top of the water.

Zoom (requires log in)

If you see this, then you have done everything correctly.

Pheonix-IV has pointed out a problem with this method and posted a workaround in his post below, be sure to read it before continuing.

Step 3 – Getting rid of the edges squarness/adding enviroment

As you can see, some of the waterfall edges are still square like and ugly. Start hiding them with doodads. I use icey rocks, some trees, floating ice and other doodads which fit the snow theme and look nice. Also, use icey waterfall on the transitions to make the waterfall effect cooler.

Zoom (requires log in)

Final Touch

For final touch, I add a polar bear, lost in the ice cold water, trying to hunt down some sleepy fish. Also a lone wolf on the mountains.

For better overall looking, set the global weather to Northrend Snow, which spices up the in-game looks.

Another waterfall, different landscape, same tehnique:

Beutiful... I'd give you rep if I could... What about the big tall waterfalls? is that possible? But still that waterfall would look great in a dense forest, kinda like a creek...

For taller ones there's a waterfall FX model which you can download here: http://www.wc3campaigns.net/attachme...9&d=1136606423

Also you can use Infrane's water plane model to touch up the water a bit. It can be found here: http://www.wc3campaigns.net/showthread.php?t=82133

One thing: Please mention where in the editor to change the global weather, some people might not know it. Nice tutorial, will be approved

I can see none of you have yet noticed a really nasty thing about doing water like that.

Zoom (requires log in)

It should be pretty ovbious what is wrong there. If it isn't, you're a gimboid, get out of this thread you primate.

Looks aweful don't it? Water shouldn't act like that.

The solution is relatively simple, make your river 1 square wider than you want the final product to be, then use the Apply Cliff: Same Level tool to move over the river, making the cliffs go 1 square over the top of the water. Problem solved!

Nice thing, im going to edit the tutorial soon. Also, if you apply raise tool little bit on the squary edges, it fixes the thing too.

Hmm you did not mention Phenoix's suggestion for resolving the issue, you simply suggested covering it with doodads. Please add Phenoix's suggestion so I can approve this.
