It's a command-line-tool, dude!
You can't just double click it.

hm i dont get any satisfiying results, maybe i do something wrong.

if i save my icon as comressed tga, reduce some of its quality (cant see a difference though) and convert to blp its 4 kb.

if i save as non-compressed tga and use the paletter (# of colours 128) its bigger in the end, around 9 kb.

i also tried to make a skin smaller, cause its the biggest i have in one of my maps. the common way i have 176 kb, with the paletter over 500 kb!

the tool is simple in its use, i think i used it the right way (else i would get any blp at all, right?)... any hints?

It gives better compression ratios meaning that size when compressed in the MPQ (ie map) is better.

And if your skin is 500kb when palleted you're using too large a resolution.

Added optional jpg-compression in the 1.3 release. (-j vs. -p switch)
Get the latest version and source code on the first page of the thread.

It creates only one mipmap, all other mipmaps point to the same image, so it should create smaller images than wc3viewer etc.
BTW I wonder if War3 uses mipmapping at all?

Oh, thanks to the IJG guys for their jpeg lib.

Another quick update to 1.3.2.
It now also supports reading jpg input images.

Default GUI

Many people don't know how, or are too lazy to do the command line thing, so I made a GUI for you... just unzip it into the same directiory and run it. It even has help buttons for every field so you know what you can and can't do, unfortuneately I didn't know whow to capture the messages returned, so I just listed every thing that could cause your image not to convert. Enjoy :p

Source is included in the second zip, not that its all that complicated or anything...

Nice. I'm sure people will find this useful.

EDIT: I've added a link to the front page.

I have another (probably final) update for this tool.
Version 1.4 comes with the following changes:

- Now auto-generates mipmaps so it works properly with textures when looking from far away
- Added -mipN parameter (replace N with the number of mipmaps you wanna have, eg. -mip8)
- Fixed a visual problem related to wrong mipmap offsets
- Cleaned up the source code

Always use -mip1 (or -mip2 for older comps) for icons and other interface textures, because those do not use mipmapping at all.

For unit textures simply leave out the -mip parameter.

Thanks go to Litany for providing the test files for my mipmap experiments.

When you start it on the command line, simply add -mip2 (for example) to the end of the argument list.

An error slipped in that broke the alpha channel on images larger than 128x128.
It's all good now, though.

You open the command line via Start/Run then enter cmd
A black window pops up where you can enter commands.
Navigate to the directory where BLPaletter is by using the cd command.
Use google if you don't know how.
Convert your images by using the commands shown in the examples on the first page (for example BLPaletter D:\icons\BTNSomeIcon.tga -mip1)
