This tool just caught my eye and it's looking really good. I'm using a lot of blp's in my map, which is supposed to be played online. I've read trough the thread a bit, but - perhaps because I'm a "lame" - I can't get these questions answered;

-Does this program "convert" these file types (TGA, BLP, JPG) to a compressed filetype that can be read and used as a BLP?
c.q.
-Can it compress TGA files too, in the same manner? (For the mappreview)

+Rep for sure!

is it just me, or does this not work nearly as well as just reducing the quality of the .blp

for instance

using this in a 16kb .tga icon with 1 mipmap took it down to 9.XX kb
converting that same icon to .blp and setting quality to 50%, saves it as 5.XX kb ( with not loss of quality noticeable in game)
an even better reduction can be accomplished with disabled icons

am I doing something wrong?

Where did you get the 9.xx kb from? From Windows explorer or the import manager?

You'd have to open the map with an MPQ viewer like WinMPQ and compare the compressed size of the images inside the map.

50% quality is quite noticeable for me anyway.

Simply drag and drop the image-file that you want to convert on the program.

If you want to use the advanced options, then you need to use command line parameters (as described in the first post), or use the GUI that was posted by botanic.

got gui and the normal blpaletter

first i used gui
i drag the tga skin, and fixed some options, and when i tried to export it...it says "only blp extensions for exporting"

then i tried making the extension blp, and some stuffs, but still doesnt work

then i tried the normal paletter, then i dropped a blp file, but it doesnt give me a compressed one

how can i make this work?

You don not drop blp files on it.
You drop tga, bmp or jpg files on it -> a blp file is created.

Hmm, I don't know. Botanic doesn't seem to be around any more, so I suggest you stick with command line.
Or did you use the GUI made by Acaykath?
If that's the case, then try Botanic's, it was posted on top of this page.

this is actually not hard to use guys

from a man with no programming background, i was able to figure it out with a few minutes of trial and error

try this:
  1. put the BLPaletter program on your desktop
  2. run command prompt
  3. type CD Desktop and press enter
  4. that will take your to your desktop
  5. now type BLPaletter and press enter
  6. it will show you a list of commands you can do with the program
  7. now as lon as your image in on the desktop as well, simply type
  8. BLPaletter imagename.extension (and what ever else commands you want, and it will output your file correctly)
btw Pitzer, I did some tests with this and saving icons at 50%

50% icons seemed to be slightly smaller when saved in the mpq then the paletted ones, by like .1kb or so

and I personally save BTNs at 50% and DISBTNs at 35%, so they will save even more space

I can't really say which method I prefer, but since I cannot type all that fast, I am gonna go with using WC3 Viewer, IMO

Actually it can be even easier - all you need to do is drag the file you want to convert and drop it on BLPaletter.exe.
