Playing SC2 maps is free, Wc3 models added to editor

Some blizzcon updates hint that Blizzard are going all in with Starcraft 2 modding - which doesn't seem to have been as successful as they/I hoped -

What is not clear is whether the editor will also be part of the starter edition. What do you think?

Too little too laaaate.

WC3C might be undead, but at least it took years of life to get that way -- SC2 modding was born undead.

Woah. That's a really wide blade for the Blademaster.

Ayh danno, ah cannae complain. Looks cool.

Inc thousands of Warcraft 4 sc2maps.

Ignitedstar 11-10-2013 06:59 AM

Meh. I won't be surprised if this gets half-assed. Apparently Activision is famous for that. It's already happened to Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 already.

Alone, the headlines "Playing SC2 maps is free" makes Starcraft 2 sound like you must pay2play. I know that it isn't, but it doesn't faze me if it was the reality.

Yeah.

I was nostalgia tripping talking about WC3 custom maps with a friend so I came to check out good ol' WC3C. Seeing my old forum posts is disgusting, but I suppose that's the way it is for most people. You guys are still awesome glancing over your posts, at least.

I'm still sad the SC2 custom mapping scene never really took off. I remember being really stoked to see what we'd be able to do with a brand new engine when it was announced, with the WC3 engine already showing it's age for a while at that point. I was hoping the whole WC3C community would move on to SC2 with me. Galaxy editor delivered on lifting a lot of the limitations that I wanted it to, but the object editor was extremely unintuitive compared to what I was used to.
What really killed SC2 custom mapping though, in my opinion, was the hosting system they had at launch, making it nearly impossible to try and discover new custom maps. Somehow maps got more exposure on a list that was 90% DOTA being auto-refreshed than they did in Wings of Liberty.

I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly.

Oh nonsense, I'm sure they weren't that bad... *checks a few*... Ok, maybe, but hey, we all were idiots back in the day (*cough* some still are :P...).

There's always Warcraft IV.

Anitarf 11-14-2013 05:14 PM

Even if it's free, the scripting language remains inferior to JASS and the object editing remains incomprehensibly complicated.

chobibo 11-16-2013 01:19 PM

I hope they make a better World Editor for Warcraft IV though...

Sunny_Hero 11-27-2013 03:00 AM

I hope people do like Warcraft 4 because Warcraft 3 is dying and the players want to play war3 are getting less.

I've been playing sc2 and there are great maps out there. It certainly seems that they are making things far more interesting than wc3 dreamed of. There is no shortage of map quality, just a shortage of players.

I wouldn't worry, wc3 has been dying every since 2002.

In 2020, we'll see.

The data editor is powerful, I'm not denying that, it's just not my cup of tea. I already avoid doing object editor work in WC3, in the past couple of years I've focused almost exclusively on coding in vJass/zinc because that's the part I still find interesting, and then SC2 comes out with a crippled scripting language and a powerful object editor, I just can't get excited about that.

Then again, I was a WC3 player first before I became a modder, so maybe once I get to play all those supposedly great SC2 maps I might grow an interest. Still, it sucks a lot that my skills are completely non-transferable, at this point I'd be better off going stand-alone like Rao is doing.

What ever happened to the Andromeda add-on to Galaxy (similar in purpose to vJASS)? If memory serves it was released (vs abandoned) and it seemed to be pretty solid with full OOP, java syntax etcetc.
I never got into SC2 editing all that much because the object editor replaced the script editor, which is pretty much the complaint everyone from wc3 has, but I was going to give it another go whenever I got around to setting up Andromeda

you'd be surprised -- the data editor learning curve becomes a lot more approachable and, more importantly, it becomes less invasive as a whole. i personally view it as a huge upgrade to the factory / database that you can pull from while using the script editor
