(1) Zombie Island: The Curse of the Lost City

8 Attachment(s)
James Hammerfist shipwrecked on an uncharted island. After a little exploration he'll find that something is terribly wrong with it...

Overview:

The inspiration for this map have been the classic old-school survival horrors, namely Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil series. I've tried hard to make it as close to those as possible. As long as I know, this may be the first map of its kind. It's also so far the only non-cinematic map made by myself.

A sequel has been in production for over a year and it will come out "when it's done". I just hope that this phrase doesn't bring bad luck.

Main fetures:

Scary atmosphere
Fixed camera angles.
Limited saves
Books and diaries uncovering the history of the island
Unique enemies requiring different approach
Many short cinematic sequences, fully skipable
Three difficulty settings.

This map is quite old, it's hosted on the Dwarf Campaign Website, has been posted on Maps'n'Mods for years and so I've already got a lot of feedback. Therefore I can address some of the more frequently discussed issues here:

Music - I've decided to keep the game silent, to give more weight to the ambient sounds.
Difficulty - it may be a good idea to start with "Easy" option. Some people complained about difficulty, so I added the 3 different settings.
Orientation - some survival horrors are sometimes confusing due to the changing cameras. It's a bit worse in this map because of the RTS controls - if you click just when the camera's changed, you may run in a completely different direction than you wanted to.
Gunpowder attack - it is a bit strange, but it's needed to maintain gameplay => shortening amount of ammo.
Inventory - some people complained that the inventory is too small. Well, that's the point. You have to decide which items to bring along.

I think that's about everything.

Enjoy your stay on the Zombie Island!

Rao Dao Zao 07-29-2006 04:26 PM

Despite this map's difficulty (I've never managed to complete it ), I say approve approve approve.

Approve approve approve.

And again for good luck, approve.

A better map you will have a hard time finding.

Daxtreme 07-29-2006 04:47 PM

is this map multiplayer or singleplayer ?

Seems sweet I'll try this.

King Klear 07-29-2006 04:51 PM

@Daxtreme
Notice the (1) in the thread's name. Also, survival horrors tend to be single player only.

@RDZ
Thanks thanks thanks and thanks
Wish you were an admin here =)
Thanks!

moyack 07-29-2006 05:05 PM

Heyyy :)

So you pass from the comedy cinematics to the horror games!! I'll check it out when I come back home.

Feanor 07-29-2006 11:59 PM

Wow, nice map. Looks like you were right about doing it on easy.

Daxtreme 07-30-2006 01:07 AM

Wow insane map.

OMG ! I'm blocked at the ice canyon with the skeletons raping you! So hard :emote_confused:

Do you have a forum along somewhere with your map so I can spam people to know what to do ? :P

ragingspeedhorn 07-30-2006 01:26 AM

Nice map mister klear, +rep!

Juliano 07-30-2006 06:19 AM

wHat the fu** I must do now? there's books that said i must find some runes, when I stand on some of them they don't are activated(the buttons)

than what I must do, very cool map but can you explain me? it's about 30 minutes lost to solve this...

HINT:the guy moves too slow...can you make him faster?

Edit: nononno, I opened the rolling stone door now, dont need to tell me nothing more now... :) keep the good job
Edit: I died when I killed the gem...what happened ;,,,,(?

Anitarf 07-30-2006 12:38 PM

A nice map. Rather short and not really all that scary, but well made with lots of nice details, like the illusion of the spiders coming from the ceiling.

I approve this.

King Klear 07-30-2006 08:16 PM

@Moyack

Irony, isn't it?

@Daxtreme

The forums used to be at here, but there was no activity, little news and therefore no point to mainatain in any further.
You can spa- *cough* post in reasonable ammounts there anyway.

@Juliano

Unless something is wrong, you won the game...
And the speed of the hero is exactly what it should be. The game is short nevertheless.

@Anitarf

Thanks... that means, three more?

You need 3 approvals in total.

Hemlock 07-31-2006 05:39 AM

My older comment looks a bit corny so therefor I changed it abit, so here where my thoughts about the game.

A great game in which is clearly visible that alot of effort and work has been made.
The camera control was nice and above all unique, might present some irritations at start but especially a few minutes in game, it a real candy to the eye, in my honoust oppinion.
The book with the dialogue clicking was another nice invention you made, very lovely.
Another things that cought my eye was the throwing of the bottle in the watter to save the game, very nice.

The only down side effect I noticed when I played the game, was that I had to play it over and over again from time time since you die so easily.

Other than that a splendid game with loads of inovational stuff, would be my summary for this game

moyack 07-31-2006 02:47 PM

I played in normal mode and I was killed after I throw the empty bottle to the sea. I'll have to put it in easy mode in order to give a good commentary.

I liked a lot how do you simulate the camera like in alone in the dark, It's just great.

King Klear 07-31-2006 05:51 PM

You were killed by the undead, not some bug, I hope...

HernanG 07-31-2006 07:11 PM

hey, nice map, im in the runes part,
Ive seen this kind of camera in Joe Quest, its very difficult to use in warcraft, not ur fault...

4.5/5

Maybe u can add imported models, sounds, and make a better terrain, in that case, this would get a 6/5

Wouldn't be as fun if it was really easy :emote_dance:

Juliano 07-31-2006 08:56 PM

HEHEHE

Now I completed the quest!!!

Very nice map, I would like to be a Moderator to approve it...

ehehehe

Really nice, let's wait until it becomes approved or no

A bit hard, but with few tries becomes better...

Thanks for submitting the map

Goodbye

You can say it again Raging, I just need to get more time to test it better, more quietly.

Callahan 08-01-2006 11:09 PM

It's the 1st survival horror war3map i've seen. It's a bit hard not perfect. But it's hardness make it stressful and there are good idea.
It would be a good thing for war3map diversity to approve it.

Feanor 08-02-2006 12:35 AM

Argh . . . I'm not exactly beating this very quickly. Great map, if you used custom models for like the trees it would go a long way towards improving the graphic quality. Also try some more small doodads that just add realism to the scene, escpecially considering your camera angle.

Right

King Klear 08-03-2006 06:18 PM

At this point, the map is almost import-free...
I might imporve that a little, but not before I'm done with the sequel.

Edit: Hmmm.. one last approval left?

Rao Dao Zao 08-03-2006 06:47 PM

Can I say approve and count for two (if, indeed, I count at all)?

King Klear 08-03-2006 06:57 PM

That would be awesome... but my guess is that you can't =(

BTW, sorry for denying you the staff status eariler. I got confused because I saw When freedom slips away had to go through this process of approving too.

Rao Dao Zao 08-03-2006 07:05 PM

No worries.

Staff members maps/ressources has to be approved just like any other persons :emote_dance:

King Klear 08-04-2006 07:34 PM

Yes.. that is logical... Not that I was following logic at that moment.

blu_da_noob 08-04-2006 09:37 PM

I played this a long time ago and loved it.

Approved.

buttoxide 08-05-2006 02:34 PM

The best part of this map is that it has a well-defined theme that he has kept to very well.

It's really something that stands out.

I'm very impressed.

Wyvernoid 08-05-2006 02:56 PM

Well if it was not a random view today I would never know that you have ONLY JUST put this map here, KK ;-)
Yay... it was a few days' enjoy for me, it was too hard for a non-skilled player like me ^_^ At a certain point I always went to find the tentacle myself 'cause the camera changed right at that moment~~
See now that your map is accepted, grats to u ***

moyack 08-05-2006 03:03 PM

Congratulations King Klear!!!

You really deserve it, is really a good map. The only bad thing is that I haven't had time to play it complete, but I'm sure one day I will and I'll give you my review.

King Klear 08-05-2006 04:15 PM

Thank you so much for your feedback and for the approval!

SeruK 08-05-2006 07:18 PM

This game is a neverending flow of inspiration, it has inspired me uncountable times to do day long projects :P

Rising_Dusk 08-06-2006 03:08 AM

Well, albeit I really didn't enjoy it --
(The camera angles killed me more often than anything else, it's the reason I hate the old Resident Evils)

I cannot deny it is a well made map.
Well done, King.

[niro] 08-06-2006 07:03 PM

This game kicks ass, i've always contemplated making a game with similar camera angles, its fun and the books you find add nice storyline, but its very difficult.

BlackFilter 08-07-2006 01:38 PM

Nice map, though it's a little hard but I enjoy playing it.. but there is a place in the map where all the doodads and units become invisible.. don't know why, or maybe it's just because of my computer. It was when I pass through the skeleton archers, before facing the skeleton warrior at the entrance of the cave. I just thought that you might need to know but you've done a nice job, keep it up!!

King Klear 08-07-2006 02:05 PM

Hmm... I've never encoutered anything like that before.
Does that happen everytime you play? Could you take a screenshot of it?

Freakazoid 08-07-2006 02:25 PM

The reason I love this map is. I loved resident evil 2 when I played it. The sounds, the terrain.

The reason I hate this map is. I made the same book system for SoV, back in 2004, so It wont be unique now:emote_sad:
