In terms of reference fineart.sk is very hard to beat.

psyduck912 03-11-2003 05:42 AM

for some reason, asian people have a very distinct style of drawing. like fen zhu.

That is so hype. The other artists seem so "non-anime", but watever flaots t hier boat

pencilgod 03-30-2003 03:02 PM

It seems a lot of art rises and falls with the right tools. I'm gonna see if I can buy those 10% - 30% - 50% grey markers.

Oh, and here's something completely off topic...but still a 'godly' fanart site...she's Japanese BTW...and her works are all done on Photoshop...the topic is the anime Hellsing.

Here's a walkthrough...the site's in Japanese...

Click on....Gallery on the left bar:

- Click the first link with three chinese characters to go to the Hellsing art gallery

- The second link are non-Hellsing art

- The last link with four chinese characters consists of random thought scribbles (very funny)

- The two links with the letters 'CG' are tutorial links...done by the artist herself...but since they're all in Japanese you won't get much from it aside from the pictures...

Click on....Paint BBS:

A pop up will show up...this is one of the best gallery forums on the net...mind you, everything's done by mouse. You get the good stuff...wacky stuff...ugly stuff...and something new goes up almost everyday.

Here's the link.

SOLID & ETC

Comments anyone?:emote_wink:

I'm not sure how true that is, maybe with the characters but with environments I think a lot of his style comes from his industrial design background.
Check out some of the portfolios of the guys here: http://www.cardesignnews.com/portfol...ent/index.html

Also not too sure about this, have a look at this: http://64.246.38.49/artbyfeng/tut3_01.html
The picture was inked using a ball point pen, and holds it's own before the marker work.
If you do get them I'd learn how to use them. They cost about $7-8 australian. A lot of the power comes from the highlights, which are generally done with white pencil and the pen outlines. Check out this tutorial: http://www.cardesignnews.com/studio/...rye/index.html
Most of it could be produced using a finliner and pencils, something like a permanent marker and a red texta could do the rest.

I'd think of it as a picture has to be good for materials to make a difference, and that pictures done with low quality materials can look better than good pictures done with high quality materials.
Ultimately it's the artist that makes the work, not the materials.
